da bet7k: When West Ham completed the signing of Dimitri Payet last Friday it would of come to a big surprise to many. And many would have asked how have the Hammers signed Payet? And why indeed has this attacking talent chosen West Ham?
da bet7: It is true, this is a real coup for the Hammers and it might come at some surprise for outsiders, but not for those involved in the club. The board and fans alike began to expect the signing after weeks of negotiations and rumours. Friday was the exciting culmination of all of that.
The deal does show real intent from the Hammers. Many will underestimate the amount of money and pulling power new boss Slaven Bilic will have. but this signing early in the summer will at least make those critics sit up and take notice.
And whilst it is a big signing for West Ham it does present some sort of a gamble, however There is a lot of money involved in the deal and if it goes wrong and Payet does not perform as he did in France, then it will cost West Ham big.
A fee of £10.7m rising to £14m and wages of £60k a week with a £10k appearance fee (as reported by the Telegraph), is costly considering Payet is on a 5-year deal with the option for an extra year, all of this for a 28-year-old.
The cynics will say it is a bad deal for West Ham, he has three good years in him and if one of those does not work out it is a lot of money for a player closing in on his thirties. A similar deal for a younger player would not be so risky as the player would have more time to settle, however Payet won’t be afforded that luxury.
All fair points, but those of us who choose to prefer to look at things with the glass half full will say it is a cracking deal for West Ham. Payet is in his prime, he got the most assists in Ligue 1, 17 in total last season – an amount of assists only bettered by Lionel Messi in Europe. That coupled with his impressive creative stats of chances made, accurate crosses and successful through passes show that West Ham have signed a player with huge ability.
And not only that it is a deal that West Ham need to make, as Bilic had already identified that he lacks creativity and a player like Payet in a ‘No.10’ position is the perfect solution for the lack of inventiveness he has.
If the signing of Payet works out for West Ham it will be a fantastic deal as Payet will add what West Ham need, and improve the side no end.
And with these sort of signings the West Ham board would of been aware of the risks of the deal, but would of weighed up all the factors to conclude clearly in this case that a deal for a player of Payet’s calibre can’t be passed up.
At the moment we don’t know if it is bad deal yet or an incredible one, all we know is that with the money that is quoted to be involved in the deal it is a gamble for West Ham considering Payet is 28.
However it is a calculated gamble, the negatives of age and money are far outweighed by Payet’s ability and what he brings to the West Ham side – creativity in abundance.
All he needs to do now is deliver the goods.
