da pinup bet: The reaction from Liverpool fans over the Fernando Torres transfer has been passionate to say the least. From the average fan on the street to ex-players and coaches, they have all been critical of the Spanish striker who they had idolised on Merseyside for years. Some fans were so irate they burned their Liverpool shirts that had the striker’s name and number on it, while the likes of Phil Thompson and John Aldridge were highly critical in media interviews.
da stake casino: It was the manner in which Torres left the Reds that caused the fans’ love to quickly turn to hatred. Despite not playing well for the last 12 months, Torres never made any signs to leave the club. His form was put down to his recovery from injury and the turmoil that was going on at the club with the sacking of Rafa Benitez, the boardroom changes and Roy Hodgson coming in. So how can an idol quickly turn into a devil?
Well the player himself did not do himself any favours during his interviews once he arrived at Chelsea. When asked why he had chosen to leave Liverpool for another Premiership club, he referred to the Blues as being a top level club. He went on to say that despite Liverpool having a rich history, Chelsea have more options. On face value, Torres wants to play at the top level and the top level is regular Champions League football which Chelsea can offer. However, it makes you wonder if this move away had been in the player’s mind for a lot longer than the January transfer window.
To play devil’s advocate here, Torres had a right to want away from Liverpool. He had been made promises that the club would strengthen the squad with signings at the end of last season but instead started poorly under Hodgson. However, there is a better way for a player to handle these situations rather than make the situation worse.
The timing of his transfer request was the first step in disrespecting the love and support the Kop had shown him since he turned up on Merseyside. Perhaps if this request was made during the Hicks and Gillett debacle the fans would’ve been more understandable or if Roy Hodgson was still in charge and Liverpool were still struggling for form, the fans would’ve seen a reason.
However, with the buzz of Kenny Dalglish coming back as manager and him and Steve Clarke’s improvement of the first team performances, it was a transfer request that came out of the blue. He isn’t the first top Premier League player to hand in a shock transfer request this season, with Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez both doing the same but at least they gave a reason. Torres decided to remain silent whilst Chelsea were working on improving their offer.
The player ended up getting what he wanted, assumingly a higher wage with better bonuses in his contract and he’ll get to play in the Champions League this season. Which begs the question, where was the grace and loyalty that has been associated with this player? Torres stayed at Atletico Madrid for a number of seasons because it was his boyhood club and couldn’t imagine playing for the likes of Real Madrid. His move to Liverpool came at the right time in his career and Liverpool was the right club for him at the time.
In hindsight, perhaps Torres will live to regret some of his comments in the build up to the Chelsea-Liverpool game on Sunday. He said that if he was to score, it would be like ‘destiny’ but the conclusion was more ironic as Liverpool came away 1-0 winners. Now Liverpool fans can start to put their hate for Torres into a more positive outlook for the remainder of the season.
