da marjack bet: Former Celtic player Davie Hay believes that Neil Lennon “could do as a good a job” as Rafa Benitez if he was handed the job on a permanent basis, as per his Glasgow Evening Times column.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Lennon’s short-term contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and there has not yet been any confirmation as to whether the Glasgow giants will look to appoint the Northern Irishman full-time, or opt to look elsewhere in the summer.
The uncertainty has of course seen other managers mentioned for the potential post, with Newcastle United’s Benitez a name that has cropped up this week given his own deal with the Magpies will soon be up.
However, despite the success the Spaniard has enjoyed throughout his managerial career, Hay isn’t convinced that he could do a better job than Lennon.
Hay wrote in his Glasgow Evening Times column: “Names like Rafa Benitez get the fans excited, but would they do any better of a job at Celtic than Neil? If he gets it, I think Neil could do as good a job as anyone who has been linked with the post.”

Is Hay right?
In a word, no.
Yes, Lennon knows the club and the Scottish Premiership really well, but he doesn’t have the experience or the tactical nous that someone like Benitez does.
It would be a massive coup if Celtic could bring the former Liverpool chief to Parkhead, and you would be confident that he would easily see off the challenge of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers next term, as well making the Bhoys difficult to beat in the Champions League.
Can you say the same about Lennon? Probably not, in all honesty.
The lure of playing under Benitez would also attract potential new signings, and that could be key in what looks like it could be a big summer of change at Celtic Park.
Lennon may be the more realistic option for the Glasgow giants, but it doesn’t mean he is on a par with someone like the Spaniard. Sorry Davie Hay.
